On 01-30-12, at about 1445 hours, Douglas County Communications received a 911 call requesting medical aid and police response to a report of a subject who had been struck in the head by a hatchet during a disturbance at a residence in the 2000 Block of Castle Street, which is located in the Green District.
Upon arrival at the residence, Deputies found Jack Salberg of Roseburg, with a significant head injury. He was initially transported by EMS to Mercy Medical Center for treatment, and then later transferred to an out of county medical facility for a higher level of care. His condition at this time is unknown.
Deputies also contacted Brian Rice, of Roseburg. He had been detained by persons who were present during the disturbance. Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, the Deputies determined that Rice struck Salberg with a baseball bat and possibly a hatchet in the head during an argument. Rice was also found to have a valid warrant for his arrest. Rice was taken into custody and lodged at the Douglas County Jail for the warrant, as well as Assault II, which is a felony.
Detectives from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office also responded to the initial report and are conducting follow up investigation.
