On Saturday, December 15, 2012, deputies and officers from local law enforcement agencies will be partnering with Kmart to provide a brighter Christmas for disadvantaged children in Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Roseburg Police Department, Myrtle Creek Police Department, Sutherlin Police Department, Winston Police Department and Oregon State Police will be participating in Kmart’s annual “Shop with a Cop” Children’s Shopping Spree from 8:45 – 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Local Law Enforcement agencies have been participating in this event for more than 10 years.

Twenty-five underprivileged children have been selected and will be paired up with a police officer and given money to buy Christmas gifts for their families. The officers help the children pick out gifts for their family and then help wrap them. Before leaving, each child is given their own gift and a filled stocking.

Most of these kids are in foster care or come from families that are struggling this holiday season. The goal is to not only help underprivileged children, but to give them the opportunity to interact with law enforcement in a positive manner.

Money to fund this program is raised throughout the year by the local Kmart associates.

We would like to thank and recognize Clint Newell Auto Group for their generous donation of $2000 to the Shop with a Cop program this year. This additional money will help us better meet the needs of these families.

All members of the media are invited to attend.
