On Sunday, February 10th, 2012, at about 0025 hours, the Douglas County 911 Center received a call from a homeowner who lives on Willis Creek Road, south of Winston. The homeowner reported that he returned home and found a burglar inside his residence. The homeowner reported that the intruder shot at him several times, but missed. The intruder then left on foot. While making the 911 call the intruder shot at the homeowner a second time. Law Enforcement personnel from the Sheriff's Office, Roseburg Police and the Oregon State Police responded to the scene and set up a perimeter.
During the initial response, the suspect, later found to be Johnathan Bunch, was located near a barn at a nearby property by a Roseburg Police Officer. Jonathan Bunch fired a round and it appeared that he shot at the police officer. The area was surrounded and the Sheriff's Office Tactical Response Team and Negotiators responded. Johnathan Bunch was then observed lying under a parked vehicle at the residence which is in the 5700 block of Willis Creek Road.
The tactical team was able to determine that Johnathan Bunch was not moving and on their approach they found that he was deceased. The Deputy Medical Examiner then checked the body and the evidence indicates that Jonathan Bunch committed suicide with a handgun.
No shots were fired by law enforcement officers. The homeowner did not fire any shots and he did not know Johnathan Bunch. An examination of the homeowner's residence found that that multiple rounds had been fired by Johnathan Bunch at the homeowner.
The Sheriff's Office was aware that Johnathan Bunch was a suspect in several other recent crimes in this area.
