Case Number:  13-1542

On Monday, April 15, 2012, at about 1230 hours, numerous vehicles were traveling southbound on Interstate 5, near Milepost 115 (Roberts Mountain), Roseburg, Oregon, when an unexpected and intense hailstorm struck. Among the vehicles traveling when the storm struck was a patrol car being operated by a Deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. One of the vehicles in the group lost traction as the hail accumulated on the roadway. The Deputy then attempted a maneuver to avoid the vehicle, which caused him to lose traction of the patrol car. His patrol vehicle then struck the median of the roadway and was hit by a semi truck. This then forced a third vehicle into the patrol vehicle, which was now partially wedged under the trailer of the semi truck. A chain reaction of collisions began, which included another Douglas County Employee, who was operating a pickup truck. This resulted in a total of 11 vehicles being damaged. Five of the vehicles were removed from the scene by tow truck. All others left under their own power. One person was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, with reported minor injuries. Five others left the scene, reporting they were going to seek medical attention on their own.

As these traffic collisions occurred, a northbound traveling pickup truck pulling a travel trailer lost control and went into the ditch. There were no injuries reported to be associated with this separate collision.

Involved drivers were:

1. Pagni, Elenaor Kathleen / Roseburg / Dodge Caravan
2. Austin, Peter Jon / Myrtle Creek / Toyota Highlander
3. Smith, Ted Alan / Eagle Point / Toyota pickup
4. Heckert, Robert Lewis / Scappoose / Ford Ranger
5. Cox, Teresa Kayla / Myrtle Creek / Pontiac Grand Am
6. Hansen, Krista / Hubbard / Transported by Ambulance / Toyota passenger vehicle
7. Potter, Shalaine Lee / Myrtle Creek / Volkswagen passenger vehicle
8. Russell, Robyn Melinda / Rocklin, Ca. / Toyota Solara passenger vehicle
9. Hess, Michael Shirl / Layten, Utah / 2011 Peterbilt semi truck
10. Olinghouse, John Paul / Roseburg / Ford F-250/ Douglas County Employee
11. Deputy Justin Weise / Douglas County Sheriff's Office

The Roseburg Police Department responded to the scene to conduct the traffic accident investigation, due to the the Deputy's involvement. The storm was reported to have moved to the south and was blamed for numerous other traffic accidents along I-5.
