Property Release
Property may be held by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office for a variety of reasons including:
- Found Property - Immediately releasable / will be held for up to 90 days before disposal.
- Property Held for Safekeeping - Immediately releasable / will be held for up to 60 days before disposal.
- Recovered Stolen Property - May be released 60 days after adjudication of case and with permission of the District Attorney's Office.
- Property Seized as Evidence - May be released 60 days after adjudication of case and with permission of the District Attorney's Office
60 Day Property Notice Letters
Property notice letters will be sent to the last known address, as well as the DMV address on file, of individuals associated with property or evidence being held at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
If property remains unclaimed after 60 days of notice, it may be auctioned, destroyed or otherwise appropriated by the County.
If you have property being held by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, you are responsible for updating your mailing address. Email notice of address change and please include your name and case number.
Picking up Property
By appointment only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 am and 4:30 pm. Scheduling appointments: 541-440-4460 or email us - leave message with name, case number or date of incident. Be prepared to bring property notice letter and photo identification.
If the owner is unable to pick up property in person, the owner may assign a designee to pick it up on their behalf. The designee must have a letter signed by the owner stating the designee was appointed to pickup the property. The designee is required to provide proper identification when picking up the property.
Picking up Firearms or Restricted Weapons
A background check must be performed on anyone picking up firearms.
If the owner is ineligible to receive their firearm(s) or restricted weapons because of ORS 166270, ORS 166250, or Chapter 737.2017 Laws, they may transfer ownership to another individual, who is legally permitted to receive the item(s). The designee must have a notarized letter signed by the owner stating they have taken ownership.

Finder's Claims
ORS 98.005' - Rights & Duties of Finder of Money or Goods
(1) If any person finds money or goods valued at $250 or more, and if the owner of the money or goods is unknown, such person, within 10 days after the date of the finding, shall give notice of the finding in writing to the county clerk of the county in which the money or goods was found. Within 20 days after the date of the finding, the finder of the money or goods shall cause to be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county a notice of the finding once each week for two consecutive weeks. Each such notice shall state the general description of the money or goods found, the name and address of the finder and final date before which such goods may be claimed.
(2) If no person appears and establishes ownership of the money or goods prior to the expiration of three months after the date of the notice to the county clerk under subsection (1) of this section, the finder shall be the owner of the money or goods.
