Vehicle Releases
Vehicles may impounded or towed by the Sheriff's Office for one of the following reasons as provided by ORS 809.716 and 809.720:
- Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants
- Driving While Suspended
- Driving While Uninsured
- No Operators License
Impounded/Towed Vehicles
Vehicles that are impounded or towed as provided above may be reclaimed by submitting the following to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office:
- Proof of lawful ownership of the vehicle
- Proof that a person with valid driving privileges will be operating the vehicle
- Proof of compliance with financial liability requirements (insurance)
- Payment of an administrative fee of $100, payable in the form of cash, traveler's check, or money order. Checks are not accepted.
Additionally, you will be responsible for towing and storage fees payable to the appropriate towing and storage business. A lien may attach to the vehicle and its contents for payment of these charges, and if not satisfied within 30 days, the vehicle may be sold. You may request a hearing to determine the validity of the tow. The request must be in written form, setting out what grounds you believe you have for a hearing.
The request must be received by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Roseburg, Oregon within five judicial days from the date of mailing of this notice of impoundment. Pursuant to ORS 809.716 (4), a hearings officer may also find the owner or person entitled to the possession of the vehicle liable for costs of the hearing ($150)
Abandonment & Hazard Tow
Vehicles towed by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office due to abandonment or as a hazard as provided by ORS 819.110, 819.120, and 819.140 may be reclaimed by:
- Proving ownership or right of possession of the vehicle to the agency causing the vehicle to be towed
- Payment of the towing and storage charges to the appropriate tow company
Additionally, a lien may attach to the vehicle and its contents for payment of these charges, and if not satisfied within the time limits prescribed by ORS 819.210, ORS 819.215, the vehicle may be sold. You may request a hearing to determine the validity of the tow, the reasonableness of the charges for towing and the storage fees.
