Identity Theft Victims: Immediate Steps
- Place a fraud alert on your credit reports and review your credit reports at any of the following resources:
- Equifax: 888-766-0008
- Experian: 888-397-3742
- TransUnion: 800-680-7289
- Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently, including banking and credit cards.
- File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.
- File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online or call 1-877-438-4338.
Identity theft and fraud are serious crimes. A criminal who steals personal information can inflict a lot of damage in a hurry - all in your name. The effects of identity theft can be overwhelming for victims and their families.
Order a Free Copy of Your Credit Report
An amendment to the federal Fair Credit Report Act requires each of the major nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.
To order your free annual report from one or all the national consumer reporting companies, visit the annual credit report website, call toll-free 877-322-8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to:
