Identity Theft Victims: Immediate Steps
- Place a fraud alert on your credit reports and review your credit reports at any of the following resources:
- Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently, including banking and credit cards.
- File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.
- File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online or call 1-877-438-4338.
Identity theft and fraud are serious crimes. A criminal who steals personal information can inflict a lot of damage in a hurry - all in your name. The effects of identity theft can be overwhelming for victims and their families.
Order a Free Copy of Your Credit Report
An amendment to the federal Fair Credit Report Act requires each of the major nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.
